It gives me very little pleasure to report that this is not the best film of 2017. That said, it’s also not the worst either. It’s also an improvement on Batman vs. Superman, which is nice to be able to say. The story holds up better than that film, and there are no unresolved subplots which ruin the rest of the film this time around. That said, the story itself is considerably weaker than it could have been, and the characterisation is lacking in a lot of places. There’s also a bunch of character development which must have occurred between the films which is never explained. That’s the only rationale I can come up with to explain the very weird lack of continuity between the films.
To give the film some credit, there are some very, very cool scenes in this film. The action scenes are also pretty goddamn cool, and Aquaman and Wonder Woman both come out of it looking very good (unfortunately Diana doesn’t look AS good as she did in her own film, but way better than Batman vs. Superman, where again she was the best thing anyway). Batman… isn’t great. And many things that I wrote in a previous blog about fearing would be true of this film are true of this film. I’ll talk about that more in the future, as I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn’t seen it.
I’ll say in conclusion it’s not a terrible film, and I’ll watch it again in the future on Blu-ray, but it could have been a lot better. Oh, and don’t expect a ton of laughs. There are more “light” moments than in Batman vs. Superman, but a lot of the “jokes” fall flat and there was maybe one that made a few people in our screening laugh out loud, and the rest just got a few murmurs.
